Monk Seal

Once home to the monk seal, from which it takes its name

Cala Mariolu is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful beaches in Italy and in Europe. Its name comes from the monk seal — mariolu means “thief” in the local dialect, after the seals that used to steal fish from the fishermen’s nets.

The beach is divided into two small coves: the main one with fine white and pink pebbles, and a smaller, more sheltered bay. The water is an intense azure with turquoise tones, perfect for snorkelling thanks to the rich marine life on the seabed.

Cala Mariolu: Crystal Clear Waters

What sets Cala Mariolu apart is the extraordinary clarity of the water and the unique colour of the pebbles, which change shade as they dry in the sun. The beach faces west, so it catches the afternoon light beautifully. In high season it can be busy, but arriving early by private boat gives you the best of it.

How to Reach Cala Mariolu

From Cala Gonone harbour, Cala Mariolu is approximately 45 minutes by boat, sailing south past Cala Luna and Cala Sisine. It can also be reached on foot via a steep trail from the Supramonte (about 2.5 hours), but the sea route is far more practical and lets you combine it with other beaches on the same trip.
